VITAMINS AND SUPPLEMENTS: HOW TO TEST FOR DEFICIENCIES
If you’re wondering whether or not you need vitamin or mineral supplementation, your best bet would be to contact a nutritionally orientated doctor. Other than that, there are a variety of “indicator” tests that should tell you enough to point you in the right supplement direction.
Dr. John M. Ellis has devised a quick early-warning test for B6 [pyridoxine] deficiency. Extend your hand, palm up, then try to bend the two joints in your four fingers [not the knuckles of your hand] until your fingertips reach your palm. [This is not a fist, only two joints are bent.] Do this with both hands. If it is difficult, if finger joints don’t allow tips to reach your palm, a pyridoxine deficiency is likely.
Betty Lee Morales, a well-known nutritionist, says that urine is a fair indicator of the ’ vitamins in your body. Since ’ vitamins are water soluble and lost each day through excretion, when your body demands more your urine will be light in colour. When the urine is dark, your ’ demands are less.
[Note: Many drugs, illnesses, and foods also alter urine colour. This should be taken into consideration.]
Another urine test can be done at home to see if you’re getting enough vitamin C:
What You Need
10 drops 5 percent solution of aqueous silver nitrate
[can be purchased at almost any chemist without prescription]
10 drops urine
2 paper cups
1 medicine dropper
Put ten drops of the aqueous silver nitrate solution in a paper cup. Collect a sample of your urine in the other cup, and then add ten drops to the aqueous silver nitrate. Let stand two minutes. The solution will change colour – from white to grey to charcoal – depending on the amount of vitamin Ў being excreted. The darker the solution, the more vitamin Ў being excreted, which means the less your body needs. You can decrease your daily intake. If the solution stays light, very little vitamin Ў is being excreted, which means your system is using it all and probably needs more. If this is the case, it is advisable to increase your intake.
