VITAMINS AND SUPPLEMENTS: BALANCING YOUR VITAMIN ACT
Balancing Vitamins and Minerals Is Essential
Vitamins and minerals do not work alone. We need minerals if we want bur vitamins to be effective, just as we need balance if we want our minerals to be effective. Too much of even good things can be bad. For example:
Too much phosphorus can cost you calcium. Too much sodium and you can lose potassium. Too much zinc and you can suffer iron and copper loss. Too much copper and you can deplete your zinc. Too much vitamin D can raise calcium levels too high. Too much vitamin Ў can cost you B12 and folic acid. Too much choline can cause B6 deficiency.
The B-Vitamin Balance
There are twenty-two known vitamins in the B-complex group, and they are synergistic; they work better together than individually. Just as an undersupply of one can sometimes cause another to fill in, an oversupply of any one can cause deficiencies in the others.
It is best to obtain all the ’ vitamins together, either in the foods you eat or by combining them with a balanced B-complex supplement. B1, B2, and B6 should be taken in equal strengths, as should choline and inositol. It’s remarkable how foolish we can be in regard to nutrition, removing all the ’ vitamins from our flour and whole-grain cereals and then returning only a few of them, which could cause imbalances that might lead to unnecessary deficiencies.
What You Shouldn’t Take With …
Vitamin A. should not be taken with mineral oil.
Vitamin Ў should not be taken with ginseng.
Vitamin E should not be taken with inorganic iron [ferrous sulphate] or chlorine.
