AGING AND GENERATIONS: PARENTS-CHILDREN RELATIONSHIPS
The University of Chicago researchers wanted to explore what the different generations talked about. They used this technique: A set of cards was shown to each person, who was asked, “Do you and talk about this?” If the answer was yes, the interviewer then asked whether the person had given or gotten advice about the subject from the other family member. The researchers were trying to discover what issues are “hot” topics for families. In what direction does advice flow between the generations?
Though advice flowed in both directions, the most frequent pattern remained the same. Whether a child was twenty or fifty-five, in relation to a parent he usually got more advice than he gave. The exception was when the parent generation was widowed or in bad health. Then advice giving became more equal or was reversed, the role of adviser shifting to the child. In other words, parents stand firm as parents no matter how old either they or their children are. It is only when a parent seems less capable-because of poor health or having to handle life without a spouse-that the much-feared role reversal seems to take place and the child takes over the adviser role.
In this study the “hot” topics for family advising tended to differ along sex-role lines. Fathers and grandfathers gave advice about work, education, and money. Mothers and grandmothers concentrated more on traditional “woman’s” concerns-dating, how to get along with people, the importance of family and friends. When the men were asked why they did not attempt to advice about relationships, the oldest grandfather generation, who most often steered clear of these topics, seemed surprised: “Everyone knows these women’s issues are none of men’s business!”
And so, as we might imagine, the most delicate subjects for family discussion differed for men and women. For grandfathers and fathers the most sensitive topics were those in their advising domain: politics, race relations, social policy, work, money. For the women, “relationships” was the touchiest area. It was here that advising flowed fast and furious among mothers and daughters and grandmothers, and so here disagreements were most likely to flare up. Because of this, to keep harmony, the families reported that they sometimes had to develop conversational demilitarized zones and not talk too much about their concerns in these emotion-laden areas of life. Paradoxically, keeping close depended on keeping emotionally separate too.
Advising is perilous. The more of it we do, the greater the chance of having a fight. The very areas where we try to mold one another by being honest or instructing are those where we tend to have trouble getting along. At the same time, advising is also central to family life. Not only is it essential to raising children, advising is what gives families a coherent world vision, a shared life view. And even though the Chicago families fought, they were close, glued together by the common values that years of teaching one another can impart. But, to preserve their good feelings about one another, the adult generations had to learn a lesson: try to steer clear of touchy subjects; more often than you would like, hold your tongue.
