TAKING VITAMINS AND MINERALS: QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS ABOUT VITAMIN SAFETY
Does a strong odour mean spoilage, and if so can the vitamins be harmful?
Strong odours don’t necessarily signify spoilage, but it is possible. [If you have been keeping your vitamins in sunlight and warmth it is more than possible, it's probable.] But even if your vitamins have spoiled, they won’t harm you. The worst that can happen is that they lose their effectiveness.
There is sometimes an alcohol smell in certain vitamin preparations. Are they still safe for consumption?
Alcohol is used as a drying agent to prevent any moisture contamination. Occasionally, when the product is packed too quickly, some of the alcohol smell remains. Your vitamins are perfectly safe. Put a few kernels of rice in the bottle. They will absorb the moisture and the smell.
Are cracked vitamins safe to take?
Poor tablet coating causes the cracks, but the vitamins are still effective and safe.
I take a multiple vitamin and mineral tablet as well as a multiple mineral pill twice a day. Can I safely take a zinc supplement, or am I overdoing my minerals?
Check your labels and see how much you’re already getting. 50 mg. of zinc is usually sufficient. You don’t need any extra. Though zinc is virtually nontoxic, there have been ill effects from intakes over 150 mg.
Is it true that large amounts of vitamin Ў can cause urological problems?
Nobel Prize Winner Linus Pauling says that vitamin Ў is harmless and takes 13,000 mg. daily. I take 4,000 mg. daily myself, and have only good to report. There might, however, be a few individuals whose systems respond negatively to large amounts of vitamin C. My feeling is that the benefits of vitamin Ў far outweigh the concerns. If you have urological problems, check with your doctor, or an orthomolecular physician.
How can I be sure there is no hidden sugar in my vitamin supplements?
You can’t, unless you only purchase vitamins where the label plainly states that they contain no sugar or starch. Beware of shiny coatings. These are usually sugar coated. Remember, the label is not required to say what the vitamin coating consists of. Your best bet is to buy from a store that handles quality vitamins stating all their ingredients. Ask.
If I take a multiple vitamin and additional folic acid, am I in danger?
A common daily dose is 408 to 800 mg., and chances are you’re not even getting that. Even if you are getting more, there’s no reason to worry. Folic acid is ° ’ vitamin, and like all ’ vitamins, it is water soluble and not stored in the body.
I see that there is vitamin D in my mineral formula. If I take a multivitamin as well, isn’t it unsafe?
No. Vitamin D is very necessary to assimilate calcium. Also, if we live in urban areas, polluted by smog, our bodies are not manufacturing enough vitamin D.
I’ve heard that dolomite is good for healing broken bones. I’m taking multivitamin capsules twice a day already, but can I also take dolomite?
Dolomite is an excellent source of calcium and magnesium, and your multivitamin – even with minerals – is not only safe but recommended. Just make sure you’re getting the proper calcium-magnesium balance [twice as much calcium as magnesium].
Are the dyes used in vitamin coatings natural or artificial, and how can I tell? Unfortunately, a lot of synthetic vitamins use coal-tar dyes in their coatings – and keep it a secret. These dyes are not necessarily harmful, but they can cause allergic reactions. My advice is to play it safe and buy natural vitamins that have no artificial adulterants – and say so!
What vitamins can I overdose on?
There are only two vitamins where toxicity should be a concern – synthetic vitamin A and synthetic vitamin D. My own recommendation regarding these vitamins is common sense. If you are taking large doses of A and D, take them for five days and stop for two, or take them every other day so that they don’t built up in your system.
What can happen if I take lecithin and don’t really need it?
Lecithin is a natural food. Forty percent of the brain is lecithin. The average person eats a hundred pounds of saturated fats per year, so we need polyunsaturates – which is what lecithin is. And since the principal composition of high-density lipoprotein [HDL] is lecithin – and HDL is capable of making cholesterol soluble by its detergent action – its presence in your diet is purely beneficial, substantially lowering the risk of arteriosclerosis.
