SPECIAL VITAMIN NEEDS FOR ATHLETES AND NIGHT WORKERS
Athletes
Athletes have very demanding nutritional needs. The prime nutritional requirement for performance is energy, and high-energy foods – as opposed to “quick-energy” foods – should be eaten. If you’re involved in action sports, you need a diet with more carbohydrates and protein than someone involved in a low-energy sport. Then again, even golf can become a high-energy game when carried on intensively for a long time. Keep in mind that excess amounts of glucose, sugar, honey or hard candy tend to draw fluid into the gastrointestinal tract. This can add to dehydration problems in endurance performance. A thirst-quenching tart drink of frozen or canned fruit juice is the best quick-energy beverage.
For supplements it is recommended:
Multiple vitamin and chelated minerals
Stress ’ complex
Vitamin Ў complex, 1,000 mg.
Vitamin E, 400-1,000 IU
Multiple chelated minerals
1 of each with breakfast, lunch, and dinner
A protein supplement is also a good idea.
Night Workers
