IMPLICATIONS FOR GETTING ALONG: ALERT TO EFFECT OF HELP
Be alert to the effect of your help: Are you genuinely doing good? A hidden danger in being a giver is doing too much. Taking over looks so right, but it may do more harm than good. For instance, your mother is having trouble walking to the store, so you do her weekly shopping. Soon she gets more and more depressed. Though shopping was a physical strain, for her mental health she needed that push to get out of the house.
Giving too much is seductive because it can be so satisfying. Both people may feel wonderful about their arrangement even though it is wrong. For example, you adore having your daughter and grandchildren around and she loves being there, but living with you is bad for her. It is keeping her from making a new life after her divorce. To really be helpful you should be encouraging her to move out, even at the price of risking her anger and depriving yourself.
People of any age are vulnerable to developing excess disabilities, the disease of incapacity produced by being helped too much. Before rushing in to take over, remember that loving is not the same as giving everything; sometimes the best love lies in giving less. To determine if you are being genuinely helpful, ask yourself these questions: “Is my daughter more independent now than before I started helping her out?” ”In what specific ways is what I am doing enriching Dad’s life?” “What are my goals in helping? Are they being reached?” In other words, to know whether you are doing the right thing, look at the results.
Another pitfall in giving is depriving someone of the best care by feeling it is your responsibility to do everything yourself: refusing to hire an attendant because caring for a mother is a daughter’s obligation; nursing a sick daughter devotedly rather than hiring the trained nurse she needs. Be careful to gear your helping not to your morality (“family is best”), but to your loved one’s needs.
Your job is to short-circuit the downward spiral I described earlier. A child starts out doing everything, becomes more and more resentful and unhappy, and finally gives up totally in frustration and rage. If you see this pattern taking shape, act to stop it before it reaches its predictable end – hating your parent (or child) and hating yourself.
