CAUSES OF HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: DRUGS, KIDNEY DISEASE
Depressed people are sometimes helped by treatment with one of the drugs called amine oxidase inhibitors. Unfortunately this makes it difficult for them to break down substances called amines, present in foods such as cheese and yeast extracts. On eating such foods the amines (which resemble adrenaline) can cause severe high blood pressure with violent headaches; complications can arise. People who require these drugs are always advised to avoid foods containing amines.
Other valuable drugs can lead to high blood pressure as an unwanted effect. Prednisone used in large doses increases blood pressure; in susceptible women oral contraceptives may also have this effect.
Kidney disease is another cause of high blood pressure, important because it is common and because it can sometimes be prevented. One form is a kidney infection caused by repeated invasion of the bladder, urinary passage and kidney by bacteria. This is known as chronic pyelonephritis. When the condition flares up it may be recognizable as a need to pass urine frequently and urgently, sometimes with a burning sensation. Backache, fever and vomiting may occur. The doctor will take such an illness seriously, and treat it with a suitable antibiotic. By repeated urine tests and, if necessary, X-rays he will ensure that the infection has been eradicated. In so doing he is minimizing the risk of progressive kidney damage which could lead to high blood pressure and kidney failure. Another cause of kidney disease, sometimes associated with high blood pressure, is the abuse of certain pain-relieving drugs. Excessive use of readily available preparations containing phenacetin or paracetamol is a common source of kidney damage. Though paracetamol is useful and effective it should, if possible, be employed only for short self-limited illnesses such as influenza.
