A strange phenomenon encountered by many cardiac patients (and others too) is the stress that is produced by the need to do well in stress-management programs. More and more techniques and programs are being offered, and many people feel they must do exactly what is prescribed. We cannot believe in “all fits one and one fits all.” You must individualize your program and realize that not every instruction applies to you. Similarly, “busy” patients who rush around trying to squeeze programs into their already frenzied schedules are on a treadmill of futility, defeating the purpose of the exercise! Finally, some patients succumb to the phenomenon of “life as therapy,” where one’s whole life is taken over by various programs and their activities. We would not interfere with people who are devoted to the cause in such a single-minded way: their belief in their system is an added benefit. For most, though, it is simply not necessary to go to such extremes.
