Kidney Disease
When the kidneys fail to excrete acids and other waste products a serious situation known as uremia results. In the past this was always fatal; artificial kidney machines have now made survival possible and the brilliant development of kidney transplantation can allow a patient to resume virtually normal life. High blood pressure was until recently a major cause of kidney failure. The kidneys are seldom damaged except by very high blood pressure levels, but when this begins, the kidney disease can itself aggravate the hypertension. This vicious circle used to be very dangerous; but newer drugs for treating high blood pressure have made the problem a rare one.
Eye Disease
Severe high blood pressure damages the fine blood vessels of the retina. This can lead to impairment of vision, even to blindness. Now that hypertension can readily be controlled this complication has become rare, but high blood pressure is important among the causes of preventable blindness.
