REHABILITATION FROM HEART DISEASE: SLIPPAGE
As sure as day follows night, so our journey has ups and downs. When we have worked hard in rehabilitation, and expect a smooth road to recovery, we can be severely disappointed if we do hit a bumpy patch. As in all aspects of life, improvement or progress after an event is not steady. Weeks or months of getting better can be interrupted by a temporary halt in progress, or even a setback. These are normal and do not mean that you will slip back to where you were just after the event.
Once you have been treated, the risk of an event recurring in the short term is significantly reduced, but not eliminated. If symptoms or events do occur, you must deal with them! Part Two outlines what to do in an emergency, but the main direction is pretty simple: if you are not sure, seek expert help! Otherwise, there is no need to be in a state of heightened alert; emotionally it is not good for you.
Cardio & BloodAnother form of slippage is not complying with your treatment recommendations. This can occur almost without being noticed, but if you are not consistently modifying the risk factorsЂ”that is, eating healthy, exercising appropriately, avoiding smoking and, of course, taking your medicationsЂ”you will be “stacking the odds” against a good recovery and increasing the chances of a recurrent cardiac event.
So far, this book has attempted to increase awareness so as to promote a better recovery. The “carrot and stick” approach is a pretty effective motivator. The “stick” has been mentioned: poorer outcome. The carrot is the converse: a better outcome and, importantly, a good quality of life. We highlight how to integrate healthy heart habits and an enjoyable quality of life in the next chapter, when we discuss the “challenge of maintenance.”
