WOMEN FIGHTING HEART DISEASE TOO: GETTING ON THE ACTIVE TRACK
It’s no surprise that women have a very difficult time following their doctor’s advice to do regular physical exercise following a cardiovascular event. For most older women, exercise is as foreign a concept as becoming a circus performer.
Boys get praised for their physical prowess at sports while girls receive attention for more “ladylike” behaviours. Sure, that picture’s changing today, but if it’s what you grew up with, it won’t help too much now.
It’s quite possible that you’ve not done anything very active in years, if not decades. You’ve become comfortable with your lifestyle, and now you resent the need for change.
To make things worse, cardiac rehabilitation classes are made up principally of men, not women. You may feel uncomfortable about exercising in front of men.
Yes, those problems all exist. They are recognised and acknowledged. But they do not justify refusal to take part in one of the most important aspects of the recovery process. It’s just as important for women as it is for men to regularly exercise.
Here are a few tips I’ve learned over the years that can help you make the transition from “couch potato” to fitness enthusiast:
Take a positive mental attitude that this is something that’s really good for you and that, given a chance, will become actually enjoyable. Almost no one who exercises regularly for six months or more wants to abandon it. You’ll feel too good to give it up!
Treat yourself to a few spirit-lifting exercise clothes. Pick out a nice, comfortable pair of all-purpose exercise shoes that you can wear at rehab, in a gym, or walking in your own neighbourhood. Find some perky outfits that reflect your positive outlook and commitment.
Recognise that it’s never too late to start. Just look around you and you’ll see other women your age and older doing a variety of active pursuits. Visiting my mother’s retirement village, I’m always delighted to see elderly men and women out walking briskly, riding bicycles, playing golf and swimming.
Find something you actually enjoy doing. For most, a daily program of brisk walking fits the bill. But you might like something else instead. Experiment with a number of activities until you decide that one or two are best for you.
Cardio & BloodKeep a record of your daily activities in your daily diary. You’ll see how fast you’ll progress, and how much better you feel in a short period of time. Reading your own accounts of how you fared just a few weeks earlier will act as a more potent testimonial than any case history I could ever provide for you.
Realise that you’re part of an entire societal change that’s gotten millions of men and women active. You’re riding the crest of the latest trend, just like getting away from smoking cigarettes. View your exercise as a way to start feeling and looking better, rather than as just a part of a forced medical regimen.
