STOPPING HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE: QUESTIONS ABOUT SEX, YOGA AND MORE
What about sex? It is often considered relaxing yet I would suppose that it raises blood pressure.
Blood pressure does go up doing the sex act itself. This has even been measured. Ten married male volunteers were once asked to have electrocardiograms taken during intercourse. Their blood pressure at orgasm averaged 163/81. However, the blood pressure falls soon afterwards, and since sex does promote relaxation, it probably does more benefit than harm. There is one exception, however. Married people having a secret affair will do their blood pressure a distinct disservice for the stress that such extra marital liaisons produce outweighs any of the benefits; at least as far as blood pressure control is concerned.
What about Yoga and biofeedback? Can they help reduce stress and blood pressure?
They certainly can. Yoga comes from India and many of its exercises tend to induce relaxation responses. A three-year study by three American-trained doctors at a Medical Institute in India found that Yoga could bring substantial relief from a variety of stress-related ailments. Interestingly enough, although all the doctors were Indians, they had never had an interest in these practices until they heard of their growing popularity in the Western world. This intrigued their curiosity and led to the studies which showed them to be of benefit.
Biofeedback is a Western and more modern technique which can also lower blood pressure. Essentially, it seeks to enable our minds to consciously control our body functions. It does require some special apparatus and some knowledge as to how to operate it. It also seems to vary greatly in its effects, at least as far as blood pressure is concerned. It works much more effectively with some people than with others. But biofeedback is certainly well worth looking into for those who are more seriously concerned with lowering blood pressure.
What about the Chinese practice of acupuncture? One hears a lot about acupuncture’s ability to alleviate many medical problems. Can it lower blood pressure?
Its practitioners say it can do so. No scientific studies have apparently been done to prove it but a health writer named Betty Lee Morales says she witnessed a dramatic instance of its effectiveness. She observed a-man in his 70s with a blood pressure of 200/110 being given an acupuncture treatment. Needles were placed in his feet and energized by a low-voltage electric current. After about 20 minutes, the needles were removed and the man’s blood pressure was taken again. This time it registered 135/80.
