RECOVERY FROM HEART DISEASE: CAN I RECOVER FROM CAD?
Cardio & BloodIn terms of the event, there will be a new equilibrium in the function of the heart following the blockage of the coronary arteries. While the process of emotional recovery takes its time, we have witnessed how, in spite of periodic slips, there is usually a new balance arrived at. We have outlined a series of phases or stages through which the patient passes. Labeling the phases of the journey is an artificial thing, and overlap occurs, especially between recuperation and rehabilitation, but by seeing the journey of recovery as a stepwise process we are better able to understand what we are going through. The process of emotional recovery starts with an initial freeze, then a thaw, often followed by a vulnerable emotional reaction. Once reconstruction in the rehabilitation phase takes effect, forward movement is much more assured, until the balance within and between body and mind, and with significant others, is restored. Sustaining the new balance will make for a good recovery.
Most cardiologists feel that one cannot recover completely from CAD per se, as one can, for example, from pneumonia or a broken leg. Until recently, it was felt that all one could do was slow the advancement of CAD. There is now some evidence that the narrowing of the coronary arteries can not only be slowed down, but, possibly, actually reversed. This is derived from a few, relatively small studies that showed a slight but significant reopening of the coronary arteries. In these studies, a rigorous treatment routine of very low fat intake, regular exercise and stress management, including group sessions, was established. It is still too early to declare these findings definitive, but they are hopeful. As it is difficult for people to adhere to these programs on an ongoing basis, it would be important if the same effect could be achieved with a less rigorous program.
