HEART ATTACK AND SMOKING
The American study showed that smokers are two to three times more likely than non-smokers to have a heart attack and to die suddenly from heart disease. In a study of heart attack in British doctors, those who smoked twenty-five cigarettes a day were at a far greater risk than non-smokers. This increase was twofold in those aged fifty-five to sixty-four years; but in those aged less than forty-five years the risk was increased fifteen-fold. There is little evidence that smoking is a major risk factor for heart attack in people over the age of sixty years, though it probably retains other ill-effects
If the cigarette is a cause of heart attack, those who quit smoking should have a decreasing risk. In studies by Dr Hammond and Sir Richard Doll this has proved to be the case. In heavy smokers the rate was considerably less within a year of giving up the habit. By ten years the risk was almost as low as in those who had never smoked.
This improvement in outlook for the ex-smoker is strong evidence that the cigarette habit is one of the important causes of heart attack. It is just possible to argue that those individuals who chose to quit smoking also made other changes in their life style -conceivably they also altered their diet, or somehow reduced their risk of heart attack. But the simplest interpretation is that ceasing to smoke was the operative factor.
Recent studies by research workers in Gothenburg and Dublin extended these investigations to people who had already had a heart attack. It was found that those who quit smoking halved their chance of a further attack. No other change in life style has been shown to have so dramatic an effect.
