Cardio & BloodThe problem with maintenance is that, in the long term, it is very difficult to sustain. Most people we meet have not been able to keep up with moderate low-fat nutrition, never mind a very low-fat diet. The same applies to exercise. How can you overcome this? Are we, as doctors, convinced that it benefits our patients to continue these practices? Of course we are!
Two things prevent you from achieving a new lifestyle: First, your previous habits were ingrained. Second, they were nice! They were enjoyable! Why should you deny yourself this? Because so much of what is not allowed is also nice and enjoyable. However, your pleasure centers may be spoiled. You need to persuade them, and there is only one way to do it: by replacing old, unhealthy habits with new habits that are pleasurable! You must do things that you want to do. It is as simple as that. If, at the recovery stage, you are doing exercise that you don’t like, stop!Ђ”but find alternatives that you do like. There is such a wide choice that everybody can find some activity they like to do. Once you have done it once, repeat it. Make sure that your pleasure center is aware of this, because once it is, you don’t have to do anything; it will “want” to do it! The same applies to eating. Start the ball rolling with foods that you enjoy. If you are tempted by unhealthy foods, remove them from your home! This is not easy to do with others, such as children, in the house, but a compromise can be reached. To repeat, you need to develop pleasurable heart-healthy habits.
