As stated before, cells produce the energy for life. If we feel tired, it is because we have dipped too deeply into our energy bank by overdoing things or because there is a malfunction in the energy production line. This is dangerous, because a body without energy reserves is a body without defence. A compromised immune system fails to destroy cancer cells, a job it normally does on a regular basis as they arise. A compromised immune system fails to conduct the body repairs needed to maintain integrity of its systems.
One of the ways in which a system can be compromised is by the destruction of its tissues by free radicals. These particularly affect the cell membrane – that is, the semi-permeable protective wall, which needs to perform well in order to let oxygen and nutrients in and carbon dioxide and toxins pass out. Cell walls are largely composed of fats (lipids) and, if these fats become oxidized, they change their quality as surely as culinary oils and fats do when they become rancid.
Heavy metal ions prompt this destructive process – especially iron (another excess in our diet caused by a high-protein intake far beyond a body’s needs, especially in later life when exercise/activity levels drop dramatically), but also copper and calcium.
This destruction of cell walls could be likened to a picketed factory where raw materials were not getting in or finished products out. Inside, at the assembly line, the mitochondria, or tiny energy producing units, attempt to make do with what is there. One of their main functions is to convert inorganic phosphate (ADP), sugar and oxygen into adenosine triphosphate (ATP). This energy-producing activity involves a chain of complex biochemical steps which are themselves dependent on an army of enzymes (organic catalysts) to make this burning process happen at body temperature.
If, for any reason, cell membranes are compromised, then ATP production falters and cells become energy-starved. This makes them more acidic which in turn attracts yet more ionic calcium into the cells. In the case of muscle cells (such as in the heart or in its coronary artery walls) this is a classic formula for them to go into spasm.
Cardio & Blood Calcium-channel blockers act to prevent absorption of inhibitory calcium ions into the cells, which is why they are so widely used today, but they do nothing to cure the underlying condition nor do they cure the energy deficit which also underlies it.
EDTA is actually capable of removing inhibitory ionic calcium from the cells, thus allowing the cells to resume energy production. Whilst removing excess calcium, it also removes other heavy metals which may also be interfering with cell activity such as iron, lead, cadmium, mercury, copper or even aluminium.
