SEX AFTER HEART ATTACK: SEX AND THE GAY HEART PATIENT
Problems for gays simply are more intensified. But the same principles apply for all of us. And whether you’re gay or straight, you can learn something from this section.
Simply put, the threat of AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases poses far more danger than that of sex itself. Fortunately, most members of the gay community have responded to the AIDS epidemic with intelligence and restraint, and the incidence of the disease in that community appears to be declining. That same intelligence can be put to use in assuring the safety of sex following a heart attack or bypass surgery.
As with heterosexual sex, sexual positions and practices vary in their appropriateness for early activity. Those requiring less strain are preferred. At the beginning, oral and manual sex are best. Anal sex may be overly strenuous. Moreover, anal sex has been thought to stimulate the vagus nerve which, in turn, affects heart rate. For both gay and straight patients, it’s best to put off anal sex until the patient is fully recovered.
The other dangerous practice more often seen in the gay community than in straights is the use of various types of drugs. Amyl nitrite and numerous over-the-Counter “poppers” adversely affect heart rate and can provoke cardiac irregularities. Cocaine, in all its forms, can be disastrous for the heart patient. Regardless of sexual preference, cocaine has been increasingly implicated in heart attacks in otherwise healthy young adults. Don’t just cut down cocaine use, cut it out entirely.
The same applies to cigarette smoking. Cigarette smoking kills. To help you kick the habit permanently, read chapter 12.
Communication remains an essential part of good relationships and good sex after heart attack. If you’re lucky enough to have a monogamous lover, talk about the situation and work on personal caring and tenderness rather than worrying about the temporary stops on more active sexual athletics. This is the time for touching, hugging and loving.
Cardio & BloodWhat to do during the weeks following heart attack for those without a companion? Immediately following the AIDS outbreak and its association with promiscuous sexual behaviour, many gays turned to auto-erotic stimuli including X-rated videotapes. This is probably best during the recovery period as well.
All things pass, and this period of recovery and sexual inactivity will as well. Your mental state is crucial here. Never lose track of the fact that you are now at the beginning of a new high in physical fitness. That same physical fitness which will confer protection against heart disease will also make you more sexually attractive and a better lover. It’s well worth the work and the wait.
