AIDS: SLASHING YOUR RISK
Fortunately, as we mentioned before, there are plenty of ways to protect yourself from getting AIDS. Here’s how.
Be faithful. Abstinence or maintaining a mutually monogamous relationship with a person who has tested HIV-negative are the only absolutely certain ways to avoid sexually acquiring an HIV infection, according to Michael Saag, M.D., director of the outpatient AIDS clinic at the University of Alabama School of Medicine, Birmingham.
Keep a condom handy. The next time you even think about having unprotected sex with someone new in your life, remember HIVЂ”as in “Hey, I’m vulnerable”Ђ” then reach for a condom.
Lubricated latex condoms are best because the lubrication protects against rips and the latex is an effective barrier against HIV. As an added precaution you can buy latex condoms that are coated with nonoxynol-9, a spermicide that has been shown to kill HIV on contact.
If you use a lubricant, be sure it’s a water-based product, such as K-Y Jelly, or spermicidal cream. Oil-based products like baby oil, cold cream or petroleum jelly can disintegrate latex condoms.
Men’s Health
Hair LossTry to keep dry. Because HIV can be transmitted through body fluids such as blood, semen and vaginal secretions, some experts advocate having sex without exchanging any body fluids at all.
Sometimes called manual sex or mutual masturbation, it is a concept that few people could have imagined before the age of AIDS. But there are a lot of things we’re all having to get used to, says F. Douglas Scutchfield, M.D., director of the Graduate School of Public Health at San Diego State University.
