Kelp
Fucus vesiculosis
Description: This kelp’s frond is coarse and yellow, growing on rocks exposed at low tide. It grows to a meter in length, is fan shaped, leathery and has smooth edges. It is harvested in summer and dried immediately in the sun.
Uses: Kelp is high in iodine, beta-carotene and minerals and used in the treatment of disorders of the thyroid gland and to treat obesity when associated with hypothyroidism.
Kola
Cola nitida
Description: Kola grows in equatorial regions. It is a tree up to 12 meters in height which has yellow flowers followed by seeds.
Uses: It contains caffeine and is a heart stimulant. It is used to treat headaches, migraine and depression.
Lime Flowers
Tilia cordata
Description: A British tree that grows to 35 meters, has heart shaped leaves and long clusters of flowers, used for honey production and tea making. It is called the linden tree.
Uses: In combination with hawthorn and mistletoe, the flowers can be used to treat hypertension. The flowers of the lime are used for palpitations, nervousness and indigestion.
Liquorice
Glycyrrhiza glabra
Description: The plant has graceful foliage which hangs down at night. It produces lilac flowers which are followed by a smooth pod. It has a long taproot with many spreading roots which send up shoots. Native to the Mediterranean and Asia, it is a nitrogen fixing plant.
Uses: Liquorice treats respiratory complaints and is known for its laxative properties. It is also used as an anti-inflammatory medicine, possessing similar qualities to prednizone. Pregnant women, diabetics, and anyone suffering hypertension or kidney complaints should check with their practitioners before taking liquorice in large amounts. Liquorice was an effective treatment for Addison’s disease as liquorice causes sodium retention. Addison’s disease causes sodium excretion.

Horehound
Marrubium vulgare
Description: Native to Britain, it is a bushy annual to 25cms with woolly white flowers in whorls.
Uses: Beneficial for disorders of the gall bladder and the stomach, it can also be used to treat menstrual pain. It is specifically of use in bronchial disorders for congestion and the loosening of phlegm. It is drunk as a tea made from the leaves.
Horseradish
Cochlearia amoracia
Description: Native to Europe, horseradish grows like a radish with long green leaves and a fleshy white root with enlarged crown being produced in summer.
Uses: Eaten raw, it stimulates digestion. It clears the head and relieves congestion of the sinuses. It works as a diuretic and fresh root scraped can be applied externally for rheumatism and neuralgia. It is used in combination with garlic for sinusitis.
Horsetail
Equisetwn arvense
Description: Horsetail is native to Britain. It has threadlike foliage that is jointed, grows from a rhizome and is similar to ferns in that it produces spores. The slender fronds have a high silica content and were once used in Europe to clean metal.
Uses: A potent diuretic, it can be drunk as a tea to remove gall or kidney stones and can assist in prostate problems. It promotes coagulation and corpuscle growth, reducing internal and external bleeding.
Irish Moss

Description: Known as ‘carrageen’, it occurs at low tide on the shores of the North Atlantic. Irish moss is a gum derived from seaweed and is used in pharmaceutical products.
Uses: Its soothing properties are useful for bronchial and digestive irritations, treatment of the heart, bladder and kidneys.
Irish moss is high in mucilage and iodine and its main use is for coughs and colds.
Juniper
Juniperus communis
Description: Common in Europe, the commercial berries are grown in Hungary. It is a shrub to over 1 meter in height producing blue berries after three years.
Uses: It is used commercially in the production of gin. It is effective used internally as a urinary antiseptic and to stimulate appetite. The oil can be used in a vaporizer for bronchial infections. The berries are said to prevent water retention. Juniper should not be used during pregnancy.

Psyllium
Plantago psyllium
Description: The seeds contain mucilage. It has a rosette of leaves and a spike which is densely covered with purplish green flowers. The rhizome is yellow. All parts of the plant are used.
Uses: The husks are effective in the relief of constipation and also diarrhea as the mucilage swells inside and has anti-inflammatory properties. It helps lower blood cholesterol. Externally the leaves can be applied to a wound and stop the bleeding.
Raspberry
Rubus idaeus
Description: The plant grows from layering and has erect stems which produce crimson berries in summer. Native to Britain, it prefers a cool climate.
Uses: The leaves made into a tea are beneficial for many women’s internal problems from menstruation to childbirth. It stimulates lax bowels and relieves upset stomachs in children. It should only be used in pregnancy from the second trimester.
Rhubarb
Rheum palmatum
Description: This Asia Minor plant has long stems, red on the outside and yellow within. The leaves are palmate and rough and the plant produces a stem of white flowers in spring. This is not the cooking rhubarb.
Uses: The astringent root in small doses stops diarrhea while in large doses it works as a laxative. Culinary rhubarb, in large amounts, also works as a laxative.
St John’s Wort
Hypericum perforatum
Description: A European herb, it grows freely up to a meter, with barren stems, pale green leaves and yellow flowers. It flowers in summer and produces black seeds with a strong smell.
Uses: Mainly used for depression and nerve pain and it can help with children’s bedwetting problems when combined with corn silk. It has been used recently in treatment of AIDS patients.
