SKIN TROUBLES: THE MIND AND THE SKIN
If, as we insist, the skin is not a mere covering of the body, but is, in fact, one of the most important of the organs of the whole system, then we must realize its important relationship with the mind. As we know, all the important organs in the body are quickly responsive to the condition of the mind, and mental and emotional disturbances soon make themselves felt on bodily functions. For example, everybody knows how the stomach reacts to such upsets; the digestion is thrown out of gear, and it may take some time before order is restored. Worry, grief, anxiety, and emotional strain will produce great nerve tension and use up the nerve energy more quickly than any amount of overwork. In short, the quickest way to disturb the rhythm of the function of the alimentary tract is through the mind.
Many people have been aware of this fact for a long time. They have seen various troubles develop which made it difficult to decide the starting point. Troubles like colitis, for example, are said to be of nervous origin because they seem to accompany a temperament that is overweighed in this way. The same is true of complaints like nervous dyspepsia, and there is a form of asthma that seems to be of nervous origin. We could go on listing other ailments which are of this nature, and in the last decade or so the term “psychosomatic” has crept into our language, showing that we tend more and more to think in terms of body and mind rather than to dissociate them in the way we did in the past. To a large extent the ordinary practice of medicine has been responsible for many of the misleading attitudes that “people have adopted towards illness. The idea prevailed for a long time that certain drugs had specific effects upon the various organs in the system, and therefore the text-books listed these agents as though the various diseases were confined to certain organs. For example, a medicine was said to be a diuretic, i.e. to have a special effect upon the kidneys and the bladder, and when people suffered from what was considered to be complaints affecting these organs the specific medicines were prescribed for the purpose of curing the disease. Following up this line of thought, intensive study was given to each particular organ, and the functions of the particular organs were described in detail with all the symptoms which manifested themselves. Later on, the idea of specialism developed, so that the medical profession itself was divided up into different categories, and there were specialists for each particular organ or set of organs: a heart specialist, a lung specialist, a skin specialist, and so on.
This attitude has led people to think of disease not as a condition of the whole body but as separate conditions, all of them more or less unrelated to one another. So that now when we talk of a certain form of disease by the name which we have given to it we are inclined to regard it as an entity in itself. For instance, we talk about the common cold having attacked us, and we then go on to talk about finding a cure for it as though it bears no real relationship to our habits and our general way of life. We do exactly the same with all the diseases we have given a name; cancer attacks us as though it is something that exists apart from the body. We have been accustomed to think of skin complaints, perhaps more than other forms of disease, without trying to relate them to ourselves and our general way of life, and it has led to a great deal of treatment that has been very disappointing. When disease exists, it exists in all the parts of the body, because all the parts are related; and as the mind and the body are intimately related at all times we must never think of disease-causation without bearing this important point in view.

COMMON SKIN DISORDERS IN ADULTS: ACNE ROSACEA
Acne rosacea is often called the curse of the Celtics as it is commonly seen in New Zealand, Australia and Great Britain. It occurs both in men and women, usually around middle age. Acne rosacea often causes red, flushed cheeks and noses, giving the impression that the sufferer has drunk a little too much! The exact cause of this condition is unknown, but there may be several contributing factors:
- Alcohol Red wines in particular may precipitate acne rosacea. It is best, however, to completely avoid alcohol.
- Hot, spicy foods. Although hot, spicy foods do not cause acne rosacea, they often aggravate it. Bland foods and cool drinks are best.
- Moisturizers. Any thick or oily moisturizer can precipitate the condition. It is not uncommon to see it following the use of oily or heavy night-time creams and sunscreens. If a moisturizer is necessary for the face, it is best to use a light cream such as Neutrogena, Nivea Visage or Simple Moisturizer and a non-creamy sunscreen such as Ego SunSense Toddler Milk, Clinique City Block, Nivea Visage with sunscreen, Roche Aquababy or Oil of Ulan Daily UV Protectant Moisturizer SPF 15.
- Oral contraceptive pills. Contraceptive pills which contain a high level of progestogen can precipitate acne. If this is the case, a low progestogen pill should be used.
- Stress. Stress seems to contribute to many skin conditions and acne rosacea is no exception. How stress produces the eruption, however, is not known.
- Strong cortisone creams. Betnovate, Celestone, Diprosone and other strong cortisone creams are not suitable for use on the face and can cause acne roasacea.
Acne rosacea is very easily treated with oral antibiotics, especially tetracycline. More recently, a topical antibiotic gel, Rozex, has been used successfully.
Acne rosacea can be associated with broken capillaries, especially around the nose and cheeks. These are not related to alcohol intake, neither are they caused by exposure to hot or cold weather. If broken capillaries occur, they can be readily treated with the new copper vapour or pulsed dye lasers, or with fine needle diathermy.
Bulbous noses can be caused by acne rosacea, particularly in men. These are best treated with a carbon dioxide laser, which removes the excess bulky tissue in layers.

Sycosis
This term is applied to the condition in which there is a chronic inflammation of the hair follicles. This and many other forms of a similar complaint affect the hair, the beard, and other hair growth, and are due to some form of parasitism. Sycosis affects the skins of persons who are run down and whose natural immunity has been diminished. It is often the last link in a long series of events, and a return to normal functioning is sometimes a long and difficult task. Urticaria
Several names are used to denote this condition: nettle-rash, hives, and, in more recent times, the various allergies. Brown Marks
Large, brown marks on the face and on the back of the hands are caused by long-term sun exposure. They are not due to age nor have anything to do with the liver, as the term ‘liver spots’ suggests. SKIN CARE: STRESS AS A CAUSE OF DISEASE
Experience has shown that a reduction of nerve energy has to be compensated for by a reduction in function, and the processes of elimination in the body appear to feel the strain first. Failure of elimination leads to a retention of the waste products in the system, and thus the “sea-water” may be directly affected. If this takes place, and we continue to carry on normal nutrition, it will not be long before the fluid medium of the body will be in danger of congestion because the balance of its contents will be disturbed.

We see, therefore, that there is no one cause of disease and that each individual is a law unto himself in this respect. Given a nervous system that is well integrated, then the stress that would put one person completely out of action makes little impression on another. A minor worry turns one person into an unhappy, neurotic individual; a major one will leave another person untouched. An emotional calamity will obsess one type of human; another will look for compensations elsewhere and make a quick, mature adjustment.
The sick and the ailing are the casualties of the strain- those who have exhausted their nerve energy and retain within the inter-cellular fluids of their system the seeds of disease that, given a particular type and heredity, will conform to this pattern, be it disease of the skin or of any other kind.

When sufferers from skin complaints are sent to those who practice psychological methods of treatment certain factors are clearly in evidence. Firstly, these people have, in most cases, tried the usual methods and have been disappointed. Secondly, they are psychologically disturbed by their afflictions in addition to other emotional and nervous tensions that afflict them. Thirdly, they are, from the Nature Cure viewpoint, toxaemic, i.e. suffering from the retention of the waste products of their bodily metabolism.
In such cases psychological treatment may be very helpful for several reasons. It may give the patient new hope by suggesting a new outlook; it will certainly insist on a more rational attitude towards the disease; it will release some of the tensions by insisting on a better orientation towards the problems of daily life; and – and this is perhaps the most important thing of all-by conserving the nervous energy it will permit the system to restore the functions of elimination and allow the balance to return to the inter-cellular fluid.
In all cases of skin disorders there is great tension of the nervous system, and this tension must be released if the normal function is to be restored. The individual must search through his life and habits to try to discover the source of his trouble, and no pains must be spared in this respect. The tension must be met by release, and then relaxation follows. The need for relaxation is of paramount importance, and any disturbance of the bodily health is an indication that we have lost the poise of the nervous system. It has to be restored so that the leakage of nerve energy does not undermine the functions of the system and rob it of its balance.
It is just as necessary to learn to relax in skin complaints as it is when the blood-pressure is running too high. The agitated mind is the great obstacle to proper relaxation, and we have to discipline ourselves to overcome it. The agitated mind has been conditioned over many years to respond to certain forms of stimulus, and once the habit is built it is not an easy task to overcome it. The actual lesion in skin disease acts in this way. It may build resentment because of disfigurement, and this may prevent the person from carrying out normal social activities. It may tend to discourage activity in sports and the exposure of the body in bathing and swimming. If such an attitude of mind develops it may build a great deal of tension in the nervous system and perpetuate the very condition the patient is anxious to overcome. The fear of the trouble getting worse is another way in which the vicious circle may be maintained, and each time a new remedy fails the agitated mind receives a fresh wave of enervating depression.

RELEASING THE STRAIN IN SKIN DISEASE
The modern way of living is filled with stresses and strains, and very few people are able to avoid them. Relaxation is a mental concept. It must exist in the mind. The body may be quite inactive, and even asleep, but if the mind is agitated relaxation will not be complete. If one dreams of a quiet pastoral scene, in which the simple things of life are being enjoyed, the body will be more at rest than if one dreams of climbing a mountain or of doing some other exciting and strenuous performance. When you have taught yourself to relax you are more than half-way on the road to recovery. Without relaxation, in skin complaints especially, you are not giving yourself a fair chance.

SKIN TROUBLES: STRESS CREATES DISEASE
When we are looking for the various causes of disease we are inclined to overlook the fact that stress and the strain resulting from it are perhaps the most important. For most people the strain of life is essentially a mental one. The body is equipped to deal with the ordinary physical labour and, as is well known, it is not very easy to overwork the system by using the muscles. It is far easier to wear down the resistance of the whole body and mind by the stresses on the mental and emotional plane. In this way we build up tension within the system and constantly dissipate the precious nervous energy.
Of recent years it has been shown that there is a much more direct relationship between the disorders of the skin and the nervous system than many people formerly imagined, so much so that the pendulum has swung almost in the other direction, and we now hear of these cases being referred to the psychiatrist rather than to the dermatologist. This means that instead of using the old-fashioned remedies to allay the eruptions on the skin the practitioner tries to release the nervous tension from which so many of these cases are suffering. There seems to be little doubt that the results have been worth while, and it confirms the Nature Cure contention that we build our diseases through our habits and our way of living.
In trying to explain the nature of the various forms of disease including, of course, skin disease, the adherents of Nature Cure have propounded their theory of toxaemia, and if this theory is properly understood it helps us to realize the importance of the mind both in the making of disease and in the effective treatment of it. Unfortunately the Nature Cure theory has been open to a great deal of misinterpretation, and it has suffered more from its friends than from its opponents. Those who have tried to make it into a little system of diet or of a few cold packs or some such two by-four system have rendered to it a great disservice.
It may be well, therefore, if we go briefly into the Nature Cure explanation of disease, because it will help us to apply it to the subject under discussion. We have already described the “sea-water,” that great fluid medium of the body which bathes the cells in the system and governs the last and most important of the digestive processes. In this medium, too, lies the secret of elimination, because here all the waste products of cell activity are deposited. This fluid is constantly on the move, using the blood and the lymph vessels as its great carrying system. It is in this fluid that the first step towards disease is taken.

Many myths exist about the cause of broken capillaries. It is often said, for example, that exposure to very hot or cold water will make the blood vessels break, which is not true. CHEMICAL ALLERGIES: FERTILIZERS, INSECTICIDES AND PESTICIDES
As far back as the 1930s, Dr Albert Rowe, in America, noticed that some of his patients had reactions to apples which had been sprayed with insecticides. He then realized that it was not just apples, but all fruits sprayed with insecticides and pesticides that made some people ill. He coined the term ‘multiple fruit sensitivity’, and this was probably the first recognition of a problem, which has developed over the past fifty years into the multiple allergy syndrome, which now affects so many people.
People with allergies to pesticides, insecticides and weed killers should ensure that all fruit and vegetables are thoroughly washed before eating. The ideal, of course, is to eat only organically-grown produce, as this has not been contaminated by any of the above, nor by artificial fertilizers. Gardening activities should be approached with great caution, particularly with respect to the various sprays and other chemical substances commonly in use. Even the handling of lawn fertilizers should be considered, as these often contain weed killers. Dr Kenyon reports experiences with patients who had been exposed to pesticides and insecticide. In one case severe progressive brain damage occurred. Another patient became progressively deaf.
An example of the devastating results thought to be caused by exposure to chemicals, is that of Vietnam Veterans, who were exposed to the herbicide Agent Orange. This could be a typical case of an allergenic substance causing illness years after the event. Some feel tired and sick most of the time and have symptoms ranging from brain disorders to major organic disease. Others experience symptoms of fatigue, irritability and irrational behaviour. Yet this product was tested and found to be safe for humans!
Allergies to food, commonplace materials and their odours are symptoms of mysterious chronic illnesses caused by exposure to chemicals.
This observation is a result of the research by a Melbourne neurologist, Dr Malcolm Barr and a former Vietnam serviceman, Mr Michael Boland. Their paper, ‘Chemicals, Behaviour and Hyper-Sensitivity: What is the Underlying Biological Mechanism for Food Intolerance?’, was written in 1983 and investigated the symptoms of chemical poisoning, especially Agent Orange. Their research was brought to the attention of the public when the Australian newspaper (13 May 1983) reported their discussion that
… a person exposed to, and thereby made sensitive to, a pesticide might not notice anything wrong immediately but four or five months or a year later, he may be clinically sick and not know why.
As his sensitivity to the pesticide increases, the problem spreads to involve sensitivity to the fumes of his gas range, furnace and water heater, the odour of wall-to-wall carpeting, plastics in the house, the vinyl interior of his car, possibly materials he handles at work Ђ” anything from solvents and lubricants to the odour of carbonless copy paper.

Their research reinforces the point that there are many people today whose immune systems, bombarded for years with the wrong substances, now cannot cope with substances considered safe. The other point is that, individually, these substances are probably tolerable. The progressive, combined assault of hundreds of chemicals in our daily existence, however, can overload the immune system to such a degree that, sooner or later, allergies to specific substances will develop. These allergies will, quite possibly, be masked in form and difficult to detect.

Skin CareIt has been found in recent years that this procedure does not always show the existence of coeliac disease, leading to conjecture that gluten/wheat intolerance may be far more prevalent than has been traditionally accepted. Therefore, irrespective of the result, a biopsy should be further verified by the use of a low carbohydrate, grain and gluten-free diet, for one or two months. An improvement in health will verify the existence of coeliac disease. Once this disease has been established, the removal of all gluten-containing foods from the diet will ensure a swift recovery. In addition, it may be necessary to restrict fats and sugars for a month or two, until the villi have begun to recover. Full recovery should take place after two to twelve months on a gluten-free diet. Once recovery is advanced, many allergy-type symptoms will disappear as the intestine loses its sensitivity to previously untolerated foods.
It is absolutely essential that a gluten-free diet be maintained permanently. Teenagers, who have been on a gluten-free diet for a number of years, may feel well enough to commence eating normal flour products again. This is a serious mistake and will eventually lead to a breakdown in health caused by renewed damage to the small intestine, and resulting in slowly increasing malabsorption of essential nutrients (vitamins, minerals and amino acids). It may be one or two years before actual symptoms are again experienced, but eventually, unless the gluten-free diet is resumed, chronic illness and stoppage of growth will result.

DAILY PLAN FOR HEALTHY SKIN: WAKING PERIOD AND BREAKFAST
Most people have some kind of a plan of daily living, and for those who have to subject themselves to a special regimen it may be a wise thing to make it quite definite. Broadly speaking, the day is divided up into two periods: about fifteen hours for the waking period and nine for rest and sleep. The waking period is divided again by the three-meal plan, which is the most suitable for the majority of people.
Those who are under active treatment for skin complaints should allow enough time after waking in the morning and before their breakfast to enable them to take care of the needs of the skin. This should mean the exposure of the whole body to the air and a brisk rub down. As a general rule this time of the day is the most suitable time for stretching exercises. During the sleeping period the muscles of the whole body have been rested, and there is a natural desire to stretch – as the cat does after a sleep. In this way the circulation is stimulated and the various joints are limbered up. No heavy or straining movements should be done at this time. The drinking of a glass of cold water first thing in the morning is a good thing and tends to stimulate the bowels into action.
Breakfast should consist of some kind of fruit, with the addition of a little milk. In the colder weather whole-wheat toast or a whole-wheat biscuit should be added. Butter should be taken, but sweet foods, such as marmalade, should be avoided. Some dried fruit may be taken, or a little honey makes a pleasant addition to the fruit and milk. Fatty foods of all kinds should be strictly avoided, and fried foods abandoned completely. If tea is taken it should be freshly made, with a little added milk but no sugar, and it is better to take it just before the meal; certainly not with each mouthful of the food.
From three to four hours should elapse before another meal is taken, and the only thing to take between the meals is water. In most cases it is advisable to take at least two glasses during the morning. If the weather is hot this will be found to be quite an easy thing to do; in colder weather it may be more difficult but it should be done. It is not advisable to add anything to the water, certainly not sweetening, which would be bad for the skin trouble. There is no harm in just breaking the flatness of the water by adding a couple of teaspoons of lemon juice.
If fomentations, compresses or baths are being used it is better to arrange for them to be taken between meals and never just after a meal. At that time the blood is drawn into the tissues of the digestive organs so as to deal with the extra work entailed by those parts, and to try to stimulate the circulation at such a time is clearly a mistake. This point is of real importance to those who are undergoing treatment that is intended to stimulate and reactivate the skin.

COMMON SKIN DISORDERS IN ADULTS: BALDING
Most men in our community are destined to develop receding hair lines. This is entirely genetically determined, and is not related to vitamin deficiency.
