DIABETES AND SEX: PARTNERSHIP
Every close relationship with a member of the opposite sex is a form of partnership, a sharing of experiences and ideas between two people. Some partnerships are short, others may last a lifetime. To start with you may be shy about telling your new partner that you have diabetes for fear that he or she will break off the relationship. But hiding your diabetes may lead to more and more lies and evasions. How do you explain that you have to eat within a certain time? If you are taking insulin, how do you manage to do it secretly? What happens if you have a hypoglycemic attack?
Diana, a seventeen-year-old, met her boyfriend, John, at an ice skating rink. They both enjoyed skating and soon began spending every Tuesday evening together at the rink. One evening Diana had to work late at college and missed her evening meal. She thought that she had made up her carbohydrate intake with crackers and an apple but unfortunately she collapsed with a severe hypoglycemic attack at the side of the rink. John was very frightened when he could not wake her up and the staff at the ice rink called an ambulance which rushed her to the hospital. No one knew that Diana had diabetes, but routine checks in the casualty department showed she had a low blood glucose level and she was soon revived.
John, much relieved, took her home. He was very upset that she had not trusted him enough to tell him about her diabetes- especially because his aunt was diabetic and he would have known what to do if he had realized that Diana was simply hypoglycemic. They are still going out three years later.
Eventually you may both decide that you want to make your partnership permanent. By this time you should certainly have told your partner that you have diabetes and he or she should know what this means to you in practical terms, now and in the future. It is a good idea if your partner learns how to help you check on your diabetes and also about your diet and how to give you your insulin or pills.
Your diabetic adviser will be happy to see your partner with you and explain things if you wish. It is important that you have frank and open discussions about all aspects of your diabetes. It can also be helpful to discuss sex and families at this time.
