TAKING COMMAND OF YOUR DIABETES: HAVING A FAMILY
People with diabetes can have happy, healthy families. Having diabetes does not prevent you from bearing normal children or from enjoying being a parent and giving your child a good start in life. However, like most health decisions in diabetes there are important factors to consider before making up your mind to have a baby.
There are several points which you need to consider as a diabetic man or woman planning to have a family:
1. Do both partners want to have a baby?
2. What risk is there of bringing a diabetic child into the world?
3. Will you be able to look after the child until he or she is old enough to look after him or herself?
4. If the woman has diabetes, is she fit enough to go through pregnancy and is her blood glucose normal?
The genetics of diabetes
Diabetes runs in families. This is true both for non-insulin-requiring and insulin-requiring diabetes. While there may be environmental factors affecting all members of a family, there is evidence that at least some of this family tendency to diabetes is inherited. It also seems that the type of diabetes breeds true; if you have insulin-dependent diabetes, other diabetics in the family will often also require insulin. Various research groups have studied the way in which diabetes is inherited. While it is possible to give an approximate idea of the risks of handing diabetes on to your family, it should be remembered that one population, for example, Canadian people, may behave differently from another, for example, British people, in terms of the pattern of inheritance. Also, the type of diabetes in your family may differ from that of another family. Unless every member is tested in a standard way, it is impossible to know how many people in a family have diabetes -and definitions of diabetes also vary.
