DIABETES: QUESTIONS ABOUT FAMILY PLANNING
Will you be able to look after your child?
Nowadays, most people with diabetes can look forward to a long and happy life. It is no longer unusual to meet people who have been on insulin for over fifty years and who have little trouble with their diabetes. However, some people with diabetes develop complications of the disease, and a very few are unfortunate enough to have severe complications such as heart disease or kidney disease at a time when they want to start a family. If this applies to you, you must face the fact that you may not be fit enough to help your children to grow up. This places an additional burden on your partner. If you and your partner are in this difficult situation, it is important to have some frank discussions with your doctor.
Am I fit enough to have a baby?
No woman planning a family should smoke, drink a lot of alcohol or be too fat. Before you become pregnant, ask your doctor to check that you are immune to German measles (rubella) because it can cause severe damage to your baby if you catch it during the early months of pregnancy. If you are not immune your doctor can arrange for you to be vaccinated against rubella. As a person with diabetes you also need to know whether you have any complications of diabetes, such as high blood pressure or retinopathy, which may worsen during pregnancy; while if you have severe complications, you must consider the risk to your health if you become pregnant. Your doctor will advise you about this.
