DIABETES AND FAMILY PLANNING: BLOOD GLUCOSE CONTROL AND PLANNED PREGNANCY
Blood glucose control
A vitally important factor is your blood glucose balance. For many years, doctors have known that good glucose control during pregnancy ensures that both mother and baby have the best possible chance of remaining healthy. But even with normal blood glucose levels from the first prenatal clinic visit onwards, more babies of diabetic mothers die than do those of non-diabetic mothers. The reason for this has become obvious over the past few years. Most women do not confirm that they are pregnant until the developing baby is several weeks old. The first eight weeks are critical in the development of the baby, because this is when most of the major body systems form. If the mother’s blood glucose level is high at this time, this early development is upset and congenital abnormalities may occur. Some of these may be so severe that their baby does not survive. However, among women with diabetes whose blood glucose level is kept within normal limits from the moment of conception, the difference in their babies’ survival and those of non-diabetic mothers virtually disappears.
Planned pregnancy
But how do I know when the moment of conception is? A diabetic mother-to-be must plan her baby and try to conceive only when her blood glucose levels are normal. Use contraception until you have your glucose balance right. Stopping barrier methods is less likely to cause a disturbance to your periods and your diabetic control than stopping the contraceptive Pill. For this reason, some doctors prefer that diabetic women planning to have a family use barrier methods of contraception. Some hospitals have pre-conception or pre-pregnancy clinics to help diabetic women plan their families. Ask if your hospital has one.
