HEALTHY EYES: WHEN LENSES ARE USED TO PROTECT AND CORRECT THE EYES
The purchase of a new or first pair of eyeglasses is often a mystifying experience for the most of the multimillions who wear corrective lenses. Indeed, there is more to acquiring spectacles than selecting appealing frames.
“Shop around, compare prices, and know what services to expect both from your ophthalmologist who prescribes the glasses and from the optician who will make them,” suggested Alfonse A. Cinotti, M.D., who is a former president of the American Association of Ophthalmology. “At the time of your eye examination, if glasses are required, your ophthalmologist should provide you with a copy of your eyeglass prescription at no additional charge. This is unquestionably the right of every patient. With the prescription in hand you may choose to visit a local optician, or if your ophthalmologist dispenses glasses, you may choose to purchase them from him or her.”
“If the prescription is properly filled, your glasses should provide you with vision which you feel is adequate,” said Burton M. Krimmer, M.D., a Chicago ophthalmologist. “A correct prescription alone does not insure that your glasses will feel comfortable on your face. You should check to make sure that the frames sit well upon your face. If the fit is wrong, they might slip off your nose and create a vision distortion and general feeling of discomfort. Though sometimes fashionable, very large frames or lenses can cause problems,” Dr. Krimmer added. “It is advisable to select a small frame and a small lens for the higher prescriptions required to correct vision problems like strong astigmatism, or severe nearsightedness or farsightedness. This is because the smaller size assures the patient a more accurately ground lens.”
If visual discomfort persists after wearing the new eyeglasses for several days, they should be checked for accuracy by a trained member of the ophthalmologist’s staff. The eye doctor will want to verify that the optician has properly filled the prescription. He will determine if the spectacles themselves are centered, and if the pupil distance, the optical center of near and far vision, has been correctly measured. Also checked will be the base curvature of the lens (the curvature of the glass) and that it has been accurately ground. The ophthalmologist will confirm that the front and the back of the lens is correct. Without this final checkup, a visual annoyance could develop if an inaccuracy exists.
