EVENING PRIMROSE OIL AND ALCOHOLISM: DAMAGE TO BRAIN AND CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM
Alcoholism can lead to chronic changes in the brain, and can affect the central nervous system. These changes are associated with the gross lack of essential fatty acids in alcoholics. Alcoholics do worse than other people in particular exercises which test their brain, such as problem-solving, learning new things, memory, perceptual-motor speed, and thinking in an abstract way. Their performance in these tests varies from mild to moderately severe. It makes sense to treat these changes with essential fatty acids for several reasons. First, essential fatty acids are major structural components of the brain. Second, essential fatty acids have major effects on cell membranes, and thereby can influence nerve conduction, transmitter release, and transmitter action.
Third, prostaglandins, which are derived from EFAs, have profound effects on behaviour. They are also able to modify conduction and transmitter function. This is the rationale for using evening primrose oil, as it is a rich source of essential fatty acids, and it converts to PGE1.
A large proportion of chronic alcoholics and even heavy social drinkers have been shown to suffer brain shrinkage. There can be a significant loss of brain tissue in chronic alcoholics. Even social drinkers may not be free of this minimal brain damage, and can lose their ability to think clearly.
Alcohol also effectively accelerates the ageing process. Young alcoholics, in their thirties to late forties, perform in a similar way to older non-alcoholics who are in their fifties.
It is possible to reverse these changes caused by alcoholism if someone gives up drinking, but it does take time. But exactly to what extent these problems are reversible largely depends on how old the person is and how long he or she has been drinking. Even after one year of abstinence, some alcoholics may still have problems in some areas, such as less practical problem-solving and non-verbal abstracting tasks.
There is evidence to show that alcoholics with these brain and behavioural problems are very low in essential fatty acids. The hypothesis is that taking supplements of essential fatty acids once someone has given up alcohol will help their brain powers and their behaviour return to normal.
