EVENING PRIMROSE OIL AND ALCOHOLISM: TOLERANCE AND ADDICTION, FOETAL ALCOHOL SYNDROME
Tolerance and addiction
People who crave alcohol need to drink more and more in order for it to have the same effect on their mood, because they have become tolerant to alcohol, and this increased tolerance is a major factor in addiction.
In animal studies, tolerance could be prevented by giving evening primrose oil (Efamol) daily with alcohol. If evening primrose oil can prevent the development of tolerance, then maybe it can also help addiction.
Foetal alcohol syndrome
A wide range of foetal abnormalities can be produced by alcohol. These include being underweight and under-length at birth, with slow growth and failure to thrive even with special care. In humans, the babies tend to have unusually small heads, with defective development of some features, such as eyes set very wide apart. There can also be mental backwardness, behavioural problems, and extreme nervousness.
There is some evidence to suggest that a block in the conversion of linoleic acid to gammalinolenic acid because of alcohol may be the cause of many of the alcohol-induced abnormalities. When evening primrose oil (Efamol) was given to laboratory animals who had been given alcohol during pregnancy, most of the abnormalities were not seen.
Caution: Pregnant women, of course, should not drink.
