ANXIETY AND ULCERS
Is there an ulcer personality? Some specialists swear that anxiety produces stomach acid that leads directly to ulcers, or lesions, in the stomach or duodenum – the tube leading to the small intestines. But proof is hard to find.
These days, 85 percent of ulcer patients find relief in drugs that control the amount of acid in the stomach. Stomach acid, which increases when you’re anxious, adds to the risk of sores rising on the surface of the stomach or duodenum. Although 7,000 Americans die each year from such ulcers, physicians often prescribe tranquilizers such as Valium. Doctors also urge patients not to smoke (cigarette smoking slows the healing of ulcers and hastens their recurrence) or drink (drinking alcohol may increase the risk of healed ulcers opening up again). In 1990, scientists discovered that a bacterium causes stomach and duadenal ulcers. The treatment now is antibiotics to kill the germs plus anti-acids.
