DONЂ™T LET YOUR HEALTH GO UP IN SMOKE: DO PEOPLE GAIN WEIGHT WHEN THEY STOP SMOKING?
Men’s HealthThe human body produces an important enzyme called lipoprotein lipase, whose job it is to store the fat circulating through the blood by increasing fat cell deposits. When fat cells become depleted, it is the function of lipoprotein lipase to replenish them. We now know that smoking inhibits the function of lipoprotein lipase which, in turn, means that less fat is stored in cells. The enzyme is still in the blood at the same levels, but it is no longer as efficient in storing fat. Smokers tend to be slightly thinner than non-smokers because their smoking has disrupted the delicate process whereby fat is efficiently stored. In addition, smoking also decreases the body’s ability to utilise certain vitamins and minerals, including vitamin C and calcium.
Studies have now been conducted to determine the effect on lipoprotein lipase levels when smokers ‘kick the habit’. It was discovered that smokers who exhibited high lipoprotein lipase levels prior to having stopped smoking gained the most weight once they quit. The explanation is that when the subjects quit smoking, the lipoprotein lipase function returned to normal, thus rendering a higher efficiency in the storage of fat. Although the subjects ingested no more kilojoules after they quit smoking than they had before quitting, substantial weight gains were made by a large number of participants.
