THE TREATMENT OF MIGRAINE-TREATING MIGRAINE WITH MEDICATIONS
Ideally, it would be safer to treat symptoms without having to resort to taking medications, all of which possess some potential risk. Currently, however, most migraine patients require medicine in order to achieve the maximum possible relief.
Pain Relief/Muscle Relaxant We believe that it is important for physicians to carefully inform their patients about commonly encountered side effects. This, however, creates a “double-edged sword.” On the one hand, advising patients of potential hazards of their medication enhances their own ability to monitor their health. On the other hand, suggesting to certain patients that such unwanted effects are possible may add to the patient’s anxiety and may even “predispose” the patient to unwanted effects. We believe that, on balance, most patients benefit from such knowledge.
The general categories of drugs used to treat headache include analgesics, mood-altering drugs, and specific agents for migraine and other headaches. Some drugs are designed to be taken to stop (abort) the occasional headache, while others are used daily to prevent the frequent headache from beginning. The advantage of the abortive approach is that it requires the use of medications only when the attack occurs. The disadvantage of this approach, however, is that the drugs cannot be taken frequently. Furthermore, the preheadache phase of classical migraine escapes control with the abortive approach. The preventive approach, on the other hand, is best for frequently occurring attacks. The advantage of this therapy is that when successfully employed, the migraine is prevented from developing. The disadvantage is that medication must be taken daily, much like birth control pills to prevent conception.
