EXERCISE AFTER CORONARY ARTERY BYPASS SURGERY: ACTIVITY CHARTS AND EXERCISE CLASSES
Activity charts
The charts may be used under the guidance of your rehabilitation coordinator, physiotherapist, rehabilitation nurse, occupational therapist or exercise physiologist. They are:
1. Walking program for every patient.
2. Physiotherapy – chest exercises and calisthenics for every patient.
3 . Exercise prescription for some patients.
4 . Advised activity
5 . Prescribed exercise performance for some patients.
You may also receive other exercise sheets at your classes.
Exercise classes
Most patients will participate in an exercise class which is part of the rehabilitation program. Classes are held weekly or twice weekly. If you cannot attend, follow the guidelines set out in the charts or use charts obtained from your rehabilitation program coordinator.
Light exercise programs involve calisthenics and specific exercises which use muscle groups at a moderate level with rests between. This light exercise helps your general recovery, particularly if you follow a home walking program as well.
Moderate exercise programs may involve active supervised walking, which may be controlled by heart rate or perceived effort gauged by breathlessness. They are conducted in a class and usually require a specified walking area or a gymnasium. Moderate exercise programs require comfortable clothing and cushioned shoes.
High intensity aerobic exercise programs are rare in Australia and New Zealand. They are based upon sustained effort, usually over 20-30 minutes, preceded by a warm-up period and followed by a cool-down period. If you participate in this type of program, you will attend three times per week. A medical clearance and some special precautions are required.
Heart rate monitoring and professional supervision may be required for higher intensity aerobic exercise programs. A chart may be given to you by the program coordinator which can be kept separately.
