REHABILITATION AFTER CORONARY ARTERY BYPASS SURGERY: BENEFITS OF GROUP EXERCISE PROGRAMS
Some people feel that they can do an exercise program on their own at home. However, there are significant benefits from doing physical activity in a group. You will be with others in the group, who have had a similar operation and you can compare your progress with theirs. Other patients will also be very supportive of your attempts to stop smoking or to lose weight. Exercise rehabilitation programs are led by a physiotherapist, physical educator, nurse or exercise physiologist with specific expertise in this field. These health professionals can guide you through your program and advise on your current status; they may speed or slow your program, depending on your progress.
Your exercise class leader may refer you to other health professionals if you have particular problems, physical or psychological, during the class.
In most hospitals where cardiac surgery is performed, there are other health professionals, including occupational therapists, social workers and psychologists, who may be able to help you with any problems you may have after your operation.
