SPECIFIC LOAD TRAINING AFTER CORONARY ARTERY BYPASS SURGERY
Weight Training Program
Weight training is required for some people to develop general muscular strength. Some exercises should be undertaken using weights and against some resistance, but it is important that these weights can be easily moved. Straining effort which involves pushing, pulling or lifting heavy weights which are difficult to move is generally not advised.
Movements of weights or pushing against resistance where movement is relatively free are useful, as it helps in rapidly building up muscular strength.
The weights moved, the degree of resistance and the speed of progress should be discussed with your rehabilitation coordinator. If in doubt, progress very slowly over the first six weeks.
Specific Muscle Training Program
Specific muscle training relies on the same techniques. If your work includes doing things that use particular muscles, you may find these activities difficult until you regain your full muscular strength.
A special program can be designed to help you achieve this. It is important, however, that you should discuss any problems about particular aspects of heavy work so that the program can be tailored exactly to your requirements.
Work Simulation
Some forms of physical activity at work require fairly considerable effort, which is frequently repeated or almost continuous throughout the day. To be able to resume such activities, you will need to follow a sustained program of both general and specific muscular and cardiopulmonary exercise, using equipment or materials similar to those used at work.
You will need to increase your training workload gradually until you are confident that you could resume the same kind of work in your job under normal conditions. You may undergo electrocardiographic or other monitoring to see if you are capable of doing so. If your performance is unsatisfactory it may be necessary to modify your job, in agreement with your employer.
