MIGRAINE HEADACHES: EVENTS AND CIRCUMSTANCES THAT TRIGGER AN ATTACK-WEEKEND AND HOLIDAY HEADACHES
Some people are ashamed to admit that they experience headaches only on weekends, holidays, or when traveling. Sigmund Freud allegedly suffered from Sunday migraine. Bizarre as it may seem, weekend and holiday headaches are recognized entities. Nevertheless, they are likely to create cynical disbelief in family and friends. In some of you, headaches usually do not occur during the week but can be reliably predicted whenever you are on a holiday or vacation.
Pain Relief/Muscle Relaxant A likely cause of many weekend or holiday headaches is altered sleep patterns, independent of caffeine. Migraines that begin during sleep may start during one of several stages of sleep. Of particular interest is the stage called Rapid Eye Movement sleep, or REM sleep. During this phase of sleep, a variety of biological events occurs, including dreaming, changes in muscle tone, and penile erection. In adults this stage of sleep accounts for approximately 25 percent of total sleeping time. It is of interest that when some people are experimentally deprived of REM sleep, a variety of psychiatric problems develops. With respect to headaches, however, prolonged sleeping and napping can result in headache because REM sleeping time is increased. In some of you, sleep is definitely a headache trigger. Arising on weekends at the same time as during the week can help avoid this reaction. Dr. James Dexter, a noted headache authority, has done much of the exciting research that has enhanced our understanding of sleep patterns and their relationship to headaches.
Additional theories for weekend headaches consider biological as well as emotional factors. Late-night hours, alcohol, parties, smoke-filled rooms, and increased social or sexual demands cannot be overlooked. The weekend or holiday headache may also reflect a “letdown” phenomenon, which, as we have already discussed, may also cause a headache.
