AVAILABLE TREATMENTS FOR BACK PAIN: ACUPUNCTURE
Acupuncture uses the insertion of fine-gauge needles into different selected points on the body to try to bring relief in cases of back pain and other ailments. The origins of acupuncture go back thousands of years. It developed mostly in Asia, but then spread to other regions. Acupuncture is practiced today in the United States by doctors who have a degree in medicine, osteopathy, or chiropractic and have subsequently been trained in the science of acupuncture.
Traditional Asian acupuncturists place the needles into specific acupuncture points along the body on lines known as meridians, to bring relief of patients’ problems. Western doctors frequently utilize the same points, as well as local trigger points – knotted areas in a muscle that may be responsible for causing localized or referred pain.
Whichever method is used, you may find that a practitioner applying the acupuncture needles for treatment of back pain will select some local sites along the spine as well as some distant points on the arms or legs.
Western medicine’s research into the subject tells us that acupuncture brings relief through certain reflexes in the body that occur by way of the nervous system. By stimulating one portion of the body and using pathways of the nervous system, an effect is obtained in the same or another portion of the body. Additionally, it is believed that acupuncture causes the body to release endorphins, the body’s own pain-relieving chemicals.
You can expect an acupuncture treatment to consist of the placement of fine-gauge sterilized needles into the various points selected by the practitioner. The needles usually remain in place 15 to 30 minutes. The doctor may periodically stimulate the points by manually twisting the needles to obtain improved results. Another form of stimulating the acupuncture points once the needles are in place is to hook up the needles to small wires that are connected to a very slight electrical current. This procedure is known as electro-acupuncture.
There are ways of applying acupuncture that do not require needles. Using very sophisticated electronic equipment, the doctor can detect the local acupuncture point and treat it with electrical micro-currents. Some patients report good results with this method of acupuncture.
If you decide to try this science, you should expect a series of at least eight to ten acupuncture treatments, to try to ascertain whether the method will be effective for your particular condition. Acupuncture patients may gain no relief or may enjoy extremely long-lasting relief from pain. Always go to a licensed practitioner and make the practitioner aware of your entire health history.
Acupuncture has very few contraindications, and the side effects, if any, are minimal, but certain disorders such as easy bleeding and local infection may preclude a patient from receiving or continuing acupuncture treatments. You need not fear contamination from acupuncture needles. Practitioners use disposable needles and discard them after each application.
