Meat
Choose lean cuts of meat-that is, meat with very little fat on it: topside, round, rump, fillet, veal, lean pork, leg of lamb.
Why not make your own mince? Use topside or round steak and trim all fat before mincing.
Buy smaller portions of meat when shopping-1/2 kg is ample for four.
Before cooking meat, cut off as much fat as possible.
Cut the skin off chicken before cooking, and keep the portions small.
Cut down on rissoles, sausages, bacon and processed meat, e.g. salami, devon.
Try using dried beans and peas in place of meat. Choose from soy, red kidney, chick peas and split peas.
Dairy foods
Replace whole-fat dairy products with low-fat varieties, e.g. skim and low-fat milk, low-fat yoghurts, cottage cheese.
Cut down on block, processed and cream cheeses. Choose reduced fat varieties wherever possible.
Use margarines and polyunsaturated oils. Remember to use in small amounts-spread thinly on bread, leave out in sandwiches with moist fillings, do not add to vegetables and avoid deep frying.
Hidden fats
Fat in some foods is easy to see but in many foods it is hidden.
Eat take – away as an occasional treat, not an everyday item.
Cut down on commercially prepared and baked goods, e.g. cakes, biscuits, chocolates, ice-cream.
Replace high-fat foods with extra mixed grain or wholegrain bread, fresh fruit and vegetables.
Snack on raw vegetables, dried fruit and crisp-breads in place of potato chips and other savory snack foods.
