Your doctor or physical therapist has several methods available that can help ease acute back pain. In addition to hot packs, massage, and exercises, ultrasound treatments will help to decrease inflammation and may give additional pain relief. Traction
Traction is an old method of treatment of back pain. The basic idea is to use weights to “pull” with traction on the lower back. This pulling stretches muscles and aims to relieve pain originating from the spine, discs, and soft tissues.
Some researchers have made improvements in the design of traction equipment, in an attempt to make it more effective. Many experts, however, have discontinued use of traction for back pain because it has not been shown to be very effective. Traction is best done in a hospital because the patient must stay in bed. This makes it a very expensive treatment for back pain, one that is usually reserved for only a few patients. Most patients find traction gives them more trouble than benefit.
