EVENING PRIMROSE OIL AND SCHIZOPHRENIA
Evening primrose oil has a significant effect on certain aspects of schizophrenia, particularly on the ‘flat’ emotions and social withdrawal common in schizophrenics. It also improves overall psychiatric status and memory, as well as helping reduce the abnormal, involuntary movements (tardive dyskinesia) in schizophrenic patients who are on neuroleptic drugs.
Schizophrenics have abnormalities in essential fatty acids. They are low in the 1 series prostaglandins, and high in the 2 series prostaglandins. No one knows exactly what causes these abnormalities but they seem to be related partly to abnormalities in the essential fatty acid precursors of prostaglandins. In schizophrenics, the levels of linoleic acid, dihomo-gammalinolenic acid (DGLA) and arachidonic acid in red blood cell membranes are below normal.
There also seems to be an abnormality in both the delta-6 and the delta-5-desaturase enzyme, which would inhibit the conversion of linoleic acid to GLA and from DGLA to prostaglandin El. The arachidonic acid may be being used up at an excessive rate to form 2 series prostaglandins.
Since schizophrenics are low in essential fatty acids and PGE1, it makes sense to try evening primrose oil as part of any treatment, as it is a rich source of EFAs, and as it converts to PGE1.
