WHY DIETERS CRAVE THE WRONG FOODS
Most diets restrict the intake of carbohydrates, regrettably not distinguishing between the good (complex carbohydrates) and the bad (refined sugars, sweets, and so on). But because a low carbohydrate intake can decrease the level of serotonin in the brain (a chemical that can act as an appetite regulator), dieters feel hungry and crave the nutrient that can most rapidly elevate serotonin levels – carbohydrates.
Biscuits, ice cream, and sweets become a dieter’s downfall because they raise blood sugar levels.
Unfortunately, the most accessible and desirable carbohydrates are those that have been strictly prohibited. (Chocolate is often craved by dieters after a broken love affair because it contains phenylethylamine, a substance that the brain produces when you’re in love, and craves when you fall out of it.)
Weight specialists now believe that there are specific carbohydrate receptors in the brain – and the heavier you are, the more you have. This means an increase in carbohydrate craving even after the appetite has been appeased with other foods.
Why biscuits, ice cream, sweets, and so forth become a dieter’s downfall is because they can most rapidly raise blood sugar levels, which produces a tranquillizing effect. After a heavy sugar intake, insulin floods the system, and – despite the fact that it makes one sluggish – insulin increases the amount of the amino acid tryptophan entering the brain, which is necessary for the production of serotonin, the body’s own tranquillizer.
My advice? Take a tryptophan supplement (250 mg. three times daily) and avoid the high-caloric, sugar-insulin diet blues. It will keep your spirits up and your weight down.
